The Actron CP9180 OBD II AutoScanner Plus Diagnostic Code Scanner encompasses many professional features in an inexpensive scan tool. If you are new to diagnostic scanners, this handy tool connects to your vehicle, scans various parts of your car, truck or SUV, and retrieves a list of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and code definitions from your vehicle's computer. But even if you're a veteran to scanners and auto repair, you'll be impressed with the new functionality that Actron has added to the CP9180. This device not only scans your vehicle, it also allows you to freeze-frame live timing and pinpoint your vehicle's problem. Instead of having to recreate a scenario over and over again, you can now playback the timing to scrutinize all the data and make a clear diagnosis. Combine this with Internet connectivity and the ability to interface with a PC, and you have a powerful, professional diagnostic scanner in the palm of your hand. This device is compatible with all OBD II (On-Board Diagnosis II) compliant vehicles manufactured in North America, Asia, and Europe from 1996 to the present.
The Actron CP9180 easily scans and retrieves DTCs. View larger. |
TrueLink Technology assures a fast and accurate diagnostic output. |
The CP9180 is bilingual (Spanish). View other features. | In addition, the CP9180 is fully updateable via the Internet, so it is designed to accommodate future vehicles as well. The device features a large, easy-to-read backlit screen that shows the trouble code and its definition. And although you still have to fix the problem that your scanner detects, this device will deactivate the "check engine" light on your dash so you'll no longer be distracted while you drive. Every Actron scan tool and code reader incorporates CAN (Controller Area Network) and the patented TrueLink Technology which guarantees the tool will link to and communicate with every OBD II compliant vehicle. This assures a fast and accurate diagnostic output -- a key ingredient to an effective repair. The CP9180 is simple and easy to use. The included OBD II cable provides both data and power connections, while the USB cable offers a quick and easy way to connect your scanner to your PC. In addition to connecting to the computer for Internet updates, you'll also appreciate the CP9180's USB connectivity because it makes printing DTCs and other information a breeze. Once the scanner is connected to your vehicle, the user friendly menu provides a variety of information in a snap. This device displays freeze frame data, O2 monitor tests, state emissions, and even records and displays live sensor data so you know what's happening with your vehicle as you make adjustments. Other features include an OBD II code library built right into the tool, an OBD II drive cycle mode, battery power so you can review diagnostic data even when the scanner is disconnected from your vehicle, and a bilingual (English, Spanish) mode. Another important thing to remember is that all emission testing facilities will fail a vehicle that has the "check engine" light illuminated at the time of the test -- even if it is only lit to remind you of a past-due oil change or 60,000-mile tune-up. With this scanner, you can shut off the check engine light and pass the emissions test on your terms. The menu also alerts you of any pending DTCs and reads the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) status. By reading the MIL status the scanner gives insight into what might cause your "check engine" light to turn on in the near future. In this way, the scanner also provides some preventive measures to help you keep a close eye on your vehicle's systems. These functions, combined with the simple keypad used to read, erase, and navigate DTCs, make the CP9180 scanner a perfect solution for identifying problems with your vehicle and keeping you safe on the road. Great product, paid too much... July 7, 2010 Auto Tech Instructor 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was delighted to find Amazon's discount on this item to $135.00, current trade price at the time was over $200.00, ordered it, arrival was timely. Surprise when Advance Auto Parts flyer arrives with a sale price of $94.00 on same unit. Bought that one too...saves wear and tear (students can be rough) on the OTC and Modis units. Timing is everything!
Does not read all available live sensor data! June 30, 2010 phsb (CA) To retrieve codes and view limited live data this unit seems to work fine...
But from my experience, beware that this tool doesn't let you see all the live data that is available from your car.
My check-engine-light fault suggested I look at the voltage of the bank-1, sensor-1 O2 (air/fuel) sensor. Working from the official Toyota Tacoma diagnostic documentation, it clearly states that this sensor's live-data can be viewed on an OBD-II scan tool; The description of the CP9180 talks about its ability to read live OBD-II data (thats why I selected this model, didn't want the extra of live-graphing but wanted to be able to record live sensor data etc.).
But it doesn't let you see _all_ the available data channels, sure I can watch live data from some of the available sensors/systems, but I can't get data from the O2 B1S1 sensor even though that truck does make this data available via the OBD-II port.
I contacted Actron support, the first response was that they can only display the available OBD-II data so clearly the sensor I wanted isn't being output.
I responded citing the Toyota documentation that this sensor data is available via OBD-II and only then Actron responsed that the I would need to buy the CP9185 to see additional sensor channels that are not supported by the CP9180!
So beware, the product comparison grid would have you believe the CP9180 is a full-function drivechain OBD-II live data viewer and only if you additionally want real-time graphing you'd need the CP9185. But I have email from Actron support now telling me I need the CP9185 to even see certain live data.
In many ways thats fine, let a manufacturer have a series of products with increasing features at increasing price-points. What irritates me is that as a consumer I can see no way from the Actron marketing/spec material that I could have known, before purchasing, that the CP9180 was so much less than the CP9185; that it wouldn't do the job I needed it to do. From their comparison grid and the product numbering it sure seems like the difference from 9180 to 9185 is just the addition of real-time graphing, but from the manufacturers support the difference is much more (then again I don't have a 9185 to try on my '01 Tacoma so I can't be sure that unit would read and display the available data channel either).
I followed-up on the support reply I had gotten, questioning their product descriptions, questioning how their customers are to know which unit will have the functionality required, and asking if they would work with me to upgrade/trade-in my 9180 upto a 9185 given that was the functionality I need. I have received no further emails.
I'm very unhappy. Actron is now on my do not recommend and do not buy lists.
To others I say beware, you may not be getting what the product description leads you to reasonably expect from the tool.
Kindergarten Software June 24, 2010 BigBird (Philadelphia, PA) I have to agree with a couple of the 1-star reviewers that the installation software is pathetic. If you're just taking it out of the box and using it, it sounds like the device works fine. But, if you're like me and want to be sure you have the latest utility software, drivers, and device software, get ready for a frustrating experience of retries until you finally get it to work!
Let me preface my comments by saying I'm running Windows XP, SP2. I also run a hardware firewall in my Westell 6100 DSL modem. I make no claims on how valid my observations/suggestions may be for other operating systems and Internet connections.
I purchased my CP9180 on 6/20/10. The printed manual has a copyright date of 2006 and the utility software on the CD has a version number of 1.0. This gives you an idea of how often Actron updates its distributed materials. The information about the programs on the CD in the User's Manual is a joke. Let me duplicate it here for you: "Follow screen prompts to install the applications". That's it.
Important pages you should visit on the web:
[...]
"Scanning Suite" (also called "Launch Pad") is the utility software you install on your machine to manage the CP9180. There is a Version 3 available on the web. Install it first (warning: it's 50 meg big!!). During the install, the correct device drivers will also be partially installed. Next, follow the instructions in the "Driver Install Instructions" document above. But note, before doing this, temporarily disable your firewall. Otherwise you will get "Unable to download from Internet" update errors from Scanning Suite (unfortunately Actron supplies no information on what port(s) its update software tries to use, so this a user's only option). There are no warnings about firewall interaction problems in any Actron documentation that I could find.
Actron technical support also told me that I had to disable any virus protection software that was running. I run AVG, but found that I did not have to shut it down to perform a successful update. Note that the update process seems to update both Scanning Suite and the software for the CP9180 itself.
When the dust finally settled, the "Tool Information" screen tells me that it's running Software ID "22EF". I assume that this is some sort of software level. Unfortunately, I did not write down the Software ID loaded in the CP9180 before I did the update, so I don't know if I actually downloaded newer software.
If you go into Scanning Suite->Setup->Installed Scan Tools->Install Scan Tool, the Software ID listed is "0000". If you try to enter the Software ID the CP9180 tells you it is running, you get an "Invalid Software ID" error. By now, that's about what I expected.
Even with this invalid ID in Scanning Suite, it appears my CP9180 is running fine. From all the other reviews, I expect actually using the device to be pretty straightforward. But, the installation and updating procedures are from the stone age.
Actron CP9180 June 14, 2010 Richard A. Schwab (San Diego, CA) Simple use for basic operation. Software is extremely valuable in problem diagnosis. Don't forget to load firmware update. Have yet to use more advances features
Amazing Product June 14, 2010 Raad Sameer The device is very useful, easy and fast and does not need much experience
