Product Description The Allen® deluxe 5-bike carrier mounts easily, quickly, and firmly to your car or truck's trailer hitch. Allen's® patented cradle system uses snug tie-downs to secure up to 4 bicycles. When not in use, the carry arms fold down, and the entire rack tilts to allow access to the lift gate. The powder-coated rack installs in just minutes with a no-wobble bolt that eliminates dangerous movement within the hitch. Easy assembly required.

About Allen Bike Racks: In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities. Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three-dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world. Keep a mallet in your trunk September 6, 2010 dschreier Its Labor Day, and the Allen bike rack has been put through its paces this summer. The good: It does hold five bikes of various types at the same time, men's, women's and kid's, and it was secure during multiple trips to the beach. The bad: the pin mechanism does not fit well. Once you pull the pin out to recline the rack to open the trunk, I have had to rotate the pin just right and then bang it in with the aforementioned mallet. The ugly: hitch mounted racks disable our car's back up assist system. Overall, for the price it works.
Great bike rack but follow product instructions September 1, 2010 PO This is a great bike rack and it holds onto the bike bars without scratching them. HOWEVER, be sure to follow the instructions and disclaimer in the packaging. The rack with our bikes attached did rip our bumper right off of our RV while in transit. The company does state that it is not to be used on RV's. Since so many other reviews stated that it worked well for their RV, we went ahead and tried it. This could have resulted in serious consequences for anyone behind us on the road. It is NOT worth the risk. Use this rack as directed by the company!
A great bike carrier for a family August 31, 2010 Stephenk5778 I've been looking for a 5-bike carrier for quite a while; this one provides the best balance between quality and value. The rack is well-built, holds bikes securely on long trips, and stays very secure in the hitch - which can't be said for a lot of carriers. When the rack arrived it was better built than some of the "top name" brands I had seen at the local bike shop for a lot more money. It held all my bikes from my top-end triathlon bike to all the kid bikes, with very little "jockeying" to get them steady. Gotta love that!
Only issue was that when the rack arrived, one of the bike holding collars was broken in transit; all it took was one e-mail to Allen explaining the problem and a replacement part was on the way. Great customer service is just another plus. Highly recommended!
Awesome! August 24, 2010 Laurie Juergens (ENGLEWOOD, CO United States) Awesome bike rack- no problems, so far no need for the extension brackets that are sold sometimes with this rack. Seems very solid and stable although we did use 2 cords through the tires to keep the wheels from spinning whilde driving- great deal!
Great bike rack August 16, 2010 Chris I bought this for my 2007 Odyssey for a 12 hour vacation drive. It showed up in 2 days, was super easy to install. I was done in 10 minutes and didn't need the directions. 5 bikes went on without a problem and road there and back with absolutely no problem. Some people talk about "sway" while driving. We didn't get any noticable movement, other than when we would hit a big bump like a speed bump - which I would expect. This is a great value for an excellent product, in my opinion.
